The Hague Summer Seminar

  • An intellectual feast with seminal readings, lectures, discussions and educational excursions focused on selected aspects of globalization. Subtopics include those of human rights & war crimes; cultural identity and the experiences of immigrants in Europe; Islam & the West; peace and conflict; and broad questions of the human condition.
  • Classroom instruction, field-based learning, and lively discussions lead by the program’s highly-regarded lead professor and program director: Dr. Ahmed Samatar, James Wallace Professor of International Studies at Macalester College.
  • Educational excursions and independent explorations linked to the program theme, such as meetings with immigrants themselves (in the Hague and Amsterdam), presentations by war crime tribunal lawyers, a visit to the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) and the Peace Palace, or engagements at other of the many NGOs, cultural organizations,  professional associations, and museums in The Hague.
