University Information

Founded in 1845, the National University of Ireland is a welcoming place with a long and distinguished history of providing educational services to non-traditional students through outreach and open learning initiatives. In fact, the university posts a handbook specifically for North American students.

Course Information

With approximately 12,500 students, the university has particularly strong programs in human rights, law, and environmental and marine studies. In addition, the Irish Studies program explores the rich cultural, literary, and spiritual traditions of Ireland, and the renowned Irish Centre for Human Rights contributes significantly to the university's profile. BCA students may take courses in the university’s new undergraduate program in human rights which examines the philosophical basis, history and origin of human rights. The courses examine the large range of issues that have been brought into human rights doctrine and discourse including the basic principles of non-discrimination, equality and human dignity through the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and human rights conventions. In addition, courses also explore the United Nations system of human rights protection and promotion, the role of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and the United Nations Human Rights Council.

In addition to human rights, there are a wide variety of courses available at NUI Galway, which has seven faculties: Arts, Celtic Studies, Commerce, Engineering, Law, Medicine and Science. Among the university's strongest programs are Irish studies, law and environmental and marine studies, but students also choose to study English, history, Italian, geography, psychology and much more.
