Why BCA Marburg?
With so many study abroad options available, we want you to know what makes BCA Marburg different from others. Here are some points to consider when choosing the program that’s right for you.
Great for Majors
- German
- Humanities, history, political science, theology, psychology, English cultural studies, and many more!
Learn Basic Translation Skills
Translation is seldom taught at U.S. colleges and universities, but translation is a very valuable tool that can readily be applied toward a career. By the time many BCA students are wrapping up their studies in Marburg, they are asking questions about how to pursue a career in translation. And since the BCA Marburg director is a CT (Certified Translator), students can benefit greatly from information from someone with professional experience in the translation industry.
Two Amazing Locations—Vienna and Marburg!
- Start your experience in the culturally-rich city of Vienna as you learn German from scratch, or fine-tune your skills at the prestigious Internationales Kulturinstitut Wien language school. Spend 4 to 12 weeks learning German before the semester kicks into gear in Marburg (4 weeks is standard time for the program but 8 weeks is recommended. There is an additional fee(s) for the 8 week and 12 programs).
- Discover the real Germany in Marburg, which is an ideal location for students who want to be immersed in all things German when they study abroad.
- Live like a king! Literally live in part of the former Duke of Marburg’s castle. Up on the hill, overlooking the medieval town, the Schloß offers many opportunities for cultural immersion.
Experienced Resident Director
Full-time, on-site Resident Director, Kristopher Riggs has directed the BCA program in Marburg since 2001. In addition to teaching the BCA translation course in the fall semester, Kris helps students navigate the German university system, takes care of student admission and matriculation to the University of Marburg, makes arrangements for student housing, health insurance and pre-semester language course enrollment and assists students with obtaining a student residency permit for the Federal Republic of Germany. He also plans regularly scheduled social events, including Videoabende and the Thanksgiving and Christmas celebrations. Kris has an M.A. in German and is certified as a German-to-English translator by the American Translators Association (ATA).

The Vienna Module: Student Perspective
“I've taken language courses at IKI Wien, Goethe Institute, and at Humbolt University in Berlin. By far, the language course at IKI was the best. The fact that a different dialect of German is taught there didn't have a negative effect on my studies at all, but instead gave me a better feel for the language. Also, Vienna was a great city to live in. ... There was always something to do or see and every building had beautiful architecture. The language program there was excellent and the city itself was beautiful. People in my courses were friendly, and I found it easy to make friends.”
